I read a news story about the state police of Rhode Island and some troopers being sued for violating the states Racial Profiling Prevention Act. The case relates to a traffic stop by the Rhode Island State police on July 11. The problem is the trooper made the mistake of doing his job and stopped a van for a traffic violation carrying 14 undocumented passengers. Although the driver had a valid license and registration he proceeded to ask for I.D from the passengers. When none of the group could produce proof of their status of US citizenship they where taken to the local ICE office. The story is very interesting to me because it states"many police departments across the country have rejected the opportunity to enforce immigration laws" A law is a law. The reasoning is that if they don't have the expertise, don't want to undermine the trust of the community and that illegals will hesitate to contact police if they have been victimized by crime. Now back up a minute. If you entered this country without the proper procedures being followed, what's that make you. A criminal.Would your first call for help be to the police?
On the July 4th weekend of 2005 I was traveling down a major interstate driving a white unmarked 16 foot box truck. I was not violating any traffic laws and I was stopped by two law enforcement vehicles. I was asked for my paperwork and I complied. After they checked things out they asked to search the truck. I agreed. When I opened the rear door of the truck it was empty. I had already told them that. My paperwork was handed back to me and I was told I could leave. I asked what I was stopped for and I was told that they had orders to stop all small to medium size trucks heading my direction. In my opinion if you have nothing to hide, what's your problem.
